Wealth Issue -
Stick Your Head In The Sand , And You May Just Get A Bite On The Bum

By Julie Bowden

What do you want in life? Do you know? Or do you automatically bring up a list of everything you don’t want? What we focus on in life tends to be what we get.

When we look at goals, money and finances usually top the list. Next is happiness! And happiness is of course, a state of being - not a goal.

Finances are clearly important. Do you have a clearly defined strategy for creating wealth? Or has this been put in the ‘too hard’ basket? There are people earning in excess of $300k per annum who are in debt. They don’t own their own homes, or have any investments. They have never budgeted – ever. On the outside they have a great lifestyle. On the inside they are praying for help!

For the most part, our education system does not teach us financial management skills. Therefore, many people may not be sufficiently educated, or qualified, to manage their money. They may be excellent at making money, but the two do not necessarily go together!

Tackling your finances can be either: complex, boring, fearful, or simple, interesting and exciting. Whatever your view – if you stick your head in the sand, you may just get a bite on the bum!

We recommend that you don’t second-guess when it comes to investing and wealth creation. Get all the information you need to make smart choices to suit both the lifestyle you have now and the one you aspire to. Take personal responsibility for making it happen, rather than doing the same as you have always done and ‘hope’ things will improve.

Seek professional advice. If you go to a gym, you don’t just go in and use the equipment. You discuss, with a trainer, what you intend to achieve and then work to a specific weekly plan.

Your finances underpin everything you do. Bruce Whiting, who co-authored ’Money Secrets of the Rich‘ with John Burley and who works extensively with Robert Kiyosaki author of ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’, says: “It is easy to create wealth. You just need a clear, defined strategy. And most people just don’t have this.”

We suggest the following to help you take the next step:-

  • Determine how much do you want to be involved in managing your investments and what level of support you need?

  • Clarify your short, medium and long-term goals.

  • Consider an advisor that does not categorise you according to a formula. If they have products to sell, they may be focused on this, rather than on your requirements.

  • When looking for an advisor - Read testimonials from their clients. Can they provide the right support? As you grow, what else can they provide to ensure you achieve optimum growth with your investments? Will they go the extra mile? Is there opportunity to meet with other clients?

  • Explore options to increase your knowledge and keep you focused. Achieving is easier when you learn with like-minded people - surrounding yourself with those who inspire you to aim higher.

Many great Masters in personal development give the same advice. Find someone with the knowledge you need and model yourself on what they do. Similarly, well respected investment experts recommend that you seek expert assistance to assist in the financial planning process.

Take action NOW. This is your life, not a dress rehearsal. Ensure you do everything possible to enjoy it to the fullest.
